Duval’s Teachers Are More than instructional experts and often go above and beyond the call of duty - they’re friends, mentors, support systems and caretakers who shape young lives. Teachers lay the foundation for what our city is and what it has the potential to be. As National Charter School Week concludes, we are proud to honor Travis Duckworth, one of Duval’s outstanding charter school teachers.
For Mr. Duckworth, teaching is “the most rewarding profession an individual could ever choose.” He believes that everything in life begins with a moment that someone has learned from someone else and that he was “called to be a teacher.”
His role at KIPP VOICE provides him with the opportunity to observe and assess student performance while maintaining thorough progress records. He believes that establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects are key to success for him as a teacher and for his students. Mr. Duckworth tutors children individually and in small groups before and after school to help them become successful. He also worked as the Assistant Coach for the championship KIPP Impact boys basketball team, and he believes that this experience helped him grow closer to his students and helped him better understand them in the classroom.
Prior to his service at KIPP VOICE, he was a fifth-grade math teacher and math interventionist for Miami-Dade Public Schools.
Mr. Duckworth is a true champion for elementary grade students and has dedicated his life to providing better outcomes for Jacksonville’s youth. He says, “I've come to understand that my purpose lies in connecting with the younger generation. Leading them to new heights, to teach them all about dedication, determination, perseverance, fortitude, the ability to achieve their dreams, reach their goals, and the importance to love others as you love yourself.
