District, KIPP receive state grant to improve collaboration

The Duval County School Board approved Tuesday a $3.8 million grant from the Florida Department of Education to improve collaboration between traditional public schools and the KIPP Jacksonville charter school network.
Through the grant, teachers and leaders from both KIPP and surrounding traditional public schools will participate in joint site visits, classroom observations and discussions. The collaboration will also help both organizations improve their use of technology through blended learning models, as well as identify new ways the two institutions can recruit teachers and leaders to traditionally hard-to-staff schools.
Currently there are 34 charter schools operating in Jacksonville, and the school district expects the learning that emerges from the KIPP collaboration to assist all charter and traditional public schools.
The grant period runs three years; over that time, Duval County Public Schools will receive $2.16 million and KIPP will receive $1.65 million towards their collaborative efforts.
