Duval’s 3rd grade ELA scores released, schools see big gains and drops

Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) quietly released the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) third-grade scores for English and Language Arts (ELA). The state average for proficiency (percentage of students who scored a 3 or above) on the assessment was 57% while Duval’s average was 50%, the lowest of the Big 7 Florida school districts:
Within Duval County Public Schools (DCPS), many schools scored much higher compared to last year’s results. Among these schools are: Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School (+15 percentage points) Annie R. Morgan Elementary School (+16 percentage points) and Stonewall Jackson Elementary School (+21 percentage points). Several schools scored much lower as well, including: River City Science Academy Innovation School (-30 percentage points), Seaside Community Charter School (-22 percentage points) and Pinedale Elementary School (-13 percentage points). Lake Forest Elementary, one of the 3 turnaround schools at risk for takeover by an outside entity if its school grade for 2017-18 isn’t a “C” or better, performed worse (-5 points) than last year.
