Update: Young Lawyers Section awarded for Ribault High mentoring program

2/4/2016

You may recall, this fall we shared how the Jacksonville Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and the D.W. Perkins Bar Association partnered with the Jacksonville Public Education Fund and Duval County Public Schools to create a mentoring program that connects students from Jean Ribault High School to young lawyers. The idea grew out of a site visit to The Leadership Academies at Eugene Butler spearheaded by two of our board members — the Honorable Judge Brian Davis and Ricardo Bedoya — to engage members of several of Jacksonville’s Bar associations in learning more about the progress and needs of Duval County Public Schools.

In January, the Jacksonville Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section Board of Governors members accepted the Affiliate Public Service Project of the Year Award from The Florida Bar. More than 20 lawyers volunteer at the mentoring program with Jean Ribault High School students. We are thankful for the young lawyer’s commitment to moving public education forward.

Do you want to volunteer with students? This month, there’s two opportunities focused on career and college readiness.

February 21 - At the College Goal Sunday volunteers are needed to help students apply for financial aid.

February 28 - At the 12th Annual College and Career Fair, volunteers are needed to serve as Career Coaches to encourage and speak with students from Ribault, Raines and Jackson High School.
