What’s New: 2014 End of Course Exam Results

The Florida Department of Education recently released 2014 results for End of Course Exams (EOC) in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, U.S. History, and Civics.
This year, compared to the large urban districts across the state, Duval County's performance was lower than the others, however there were several areas of growth at the district level to share.
What Does the Visualization Show?
In the graphic below you will find three tabs. The first tab shows the results for the percentage of students passing the EOCs in each subject area for the state, Duval County, and the six other largest counties in the state. In each graph, Duval County is shown in red and the statewide average is in black. You can use the checkboxes to the right of the graphic to switch between EOC tests and hover your mouse over the bars for more information.
On the second tab and third tabs, Algebra 1 is the focus. The Algebra 1 EOC must be passed with a level 3 or higher in order for students to graduate.
The second tab shows the percentage of students passing the exam with a level 3 or above at each Duval County school. The graphic also provides details about the schools such as Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) rate (color of shape), the number of students taking the EOC exam (size of shape), and the type of school (type of shape).
The third tab shows the growth, either negative or positive, in the percentage of students passing the Algebra 1 EOC exam for each Duval County school. Use the checkboxes to the right of the graphic to switch between school type and school level.

What Does the Data Show?
Comparison at the State Level
Although the overall performance of Duval County fell on several End-of-Course exams, such as Algebra 1 (-2%), Geometry (-4%), and Biology (-1%), the percent of students passing the U.S. History EOC exam increased by 19%. This growth by the district on the U.S. History EOC paralleled growth experienced by the state, which increased by 10 percentage points from last year to reach 65% of all students passing this exam.
Comparison at the District Level
When examining the Algebra 1 EOC exam specifically, over half of Duval County schools experienced gains in the percentage of students passing the exam with a level 3 or higher. For Duval County high schools, 90% experienced an increase in proficiency. These increases are instrumental given that the Algebra 1 EOC exam must be passed in order for students to graduate.
Here are some of this year's tops performing schools based on the percentage of students passing the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam:
Northwestern Middle School: 97%
Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School: 92%
Lavilla School of the Arts: 92%
Duncan U. Fletcher Middle School: 91%
Julia Landon College Preparatory Leadership Development School: 90%
NOTE: The data used in the graphic is representative of all grade levels taking the EOC exams. The number of test-takers is based on the number of students taking the EOC exams for the first time in the spring administration of the tests.
