Statement on the shooting at Raines-Lee football game

8/25/2018

The Jacksonville Public Education Fund extends our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of last night's shooting outside the Raines-Lee high school football game. We agree with Dr. Diana Greene's comment that gun violence in our schools is unacceptable. No one should fear being shot at a football game. Our students, teachers and administrators deserve to know they are safe each day when they report to school. We are grateful for the work Duval County Public Schools has done to improve security in our schools, but this tragic event reveals that we have more work to do as a school system and a community to ensure the safety of everyone in our public schools. Dr. Greene has made safety one of her top priorities. We look forward to supporting her in that work and ask all education advocates to play a meaningful role in efforts to ensure our school communities are safe.
