Be the Bridge: How DonorsChoose and the Community First Cares Foundation helped Ms. Pettaway prepare students for a year of change

Ms. Pettway, a third-grade teacher at Highlands Estates Academy, faced a unique challenge. Not only was her school displaced during the 2023–2024 school year due to renovations, but the upcoming school year would bring even more change—a new school name, a new building, and a school merger.

Knowing how important stability is for young learners, Ms. Pettway wanted to ensure her students walked into a welcoming classroom filled with the tools they needed to feel confident, supported, and ready to learn.

She turned to DonorsChoose, sharing her story and vision for a fresh start. Thanks to the DonorsChoose School District Matching Grant Program, her project was fully funded—matched by a generous gift from our partner, Community First Cares Foundation.

Now, her classroom is stocked with essentials like pencils, folders, and paper—and her students are stepping into their new school year feeling prepared and seen.
