Parent Academy started with "A Day At The Movies"

After several months in the planning, the Parent Academy started with a day at the movies where Duval County parents or caregivers and their children had the opportunity to watch "Finding Nemo," and later discuss how to use tools such as movies to interact with their children and to promote learning.  The Parent Academy is a new initiative from the Duval County Public Schools that promotes parental involvement in order to improve student achievement.

Research by Lindsay Page and Ben Castleman of Harvard University shows that one in five low-income students accepted to a post-secondary institution do not show up in the fall. That rate is higher (40 percent) among students who plan to attend community colleges. Researchers are calling this phenomenon "summer melt."
