Parent Academy started with "A Day At The Movies"

After several months in the planning, the Parent Academy started with a day at the movies where Duval County parents or caregivers and their children had the opportunity to watch "Finding Nemo," and later discuss how to use tools such as movies to interact with their children and to promote learning.
The activity started with a brief presentation from Dr. Nikolai Vitti about the Parent Academy, and followed by a warm welcome from Dr. Kimberly Davis and the Teacher of the Year, Apryl Shackelford, who now will be working as a full-time instructor at the Parent Academy.
After the movie presentation Apryl Shackelford guided a brief discussion with participants about the lessons from the movie.
The Parent Academy is a new initiative from the Duval County Public Schools that promotes parental involvement in order to improve student achievement. Classes will be offered in three strands: Student Achievement, Parenting & Advocacy, and Personal & Individual Growth.
Classes are free and will be offered all around the city in libraries, faith-based organizations, schools, government offices, and community centers. For more information about how to register for the Parent Academy and to view the class catalog, click here.
