Discovering Mayport Elementary with community members and partners

As a youth in middle school, I remember telling my good friend that I wanted to be a Marine Biologist or a Veterinarian. That dream stayed strong all the way up to my freshman year of college when I discovered hard core Biology 2.

After the Discover Duval tour at Mayport Elementary, this reminded me of why I longed to work with sharks, whales and marine creatures of all types. I loved watching the Discovery Channel with the hopes of interning at Sea World and traveling the world with the National Geographic.

Mayport Elementary would have been the school made precisely for a kid with the goals and aspiration to be in the Coastal Sciences field.

The school has a student-centered learning focus that involves hands-on activities like touch tanks with various sea creatures, comprehensive science projects that explore sea life on the ocean floor all the way up to the sand dunes they may dwell in.

Principal DiMattia and her school administration has done such an amazing job with effective partnerships with organizations such as Blessings in a Backpack, Surf Riders, Cathedral Arts Project who are an essential part of the school's success. They have transformed the school from an ordinary elementary school to an extraordinary place where teachers are unleashing learning techniques and activities that assists the school to lead the way in coastal science education.
