Supporting our Military Veterans, Active Members and their Families

11/11/2013

Today, we honor our military veterans and active service members who have served for our freedom. America's veterans sacrificed their time and lives for the common good and our national security.

Our organization is grateful and would like to take the time to thank our nation's veterans and currently serving military members. This is also a time to reflect on the service and sacrifice that so many military families make.

As a military wife, I would like to personally thank my husband for his service as a Florida National Guard Reservist. Our family experienced deployment like so many other military families in America. Mothers, fathers, siblings, spouses and children anxiously wait for their soldier's return back home. As they wait, people in our public schools work tirelessly to support them such as School Liaison Officers and Military Family Life Consultants. You can learn more about those programs on the Duval County Council of PTAs website.

It's important that we continue to support our military families across every state and in every classroom. Another way to do that is by supporting Common Core State Standards. These standards will help children who move into and out of Florida be successful in school. Learn more about them at www.jaxpef.org/SupportTheCore. Forty-five states have adopted the Common Core State Standards, which will provide teachers, parents and students with clear expectations that will ensure that students in Duval County and throughout the state are workforce ready and prepared for college.
