What Duval County parents and students said about the proposed uniform policy

In January, we covered the Duval County Public Schools proposed uniform policy and community engagement efforts to gather input from different stakeholders. On March 4, Duval County School Board members and Superintendent Nikolai Vitti held a workshop with the uniform policy, governance and budget on the agenda.
Superintendent Vitti presented the uniform survey results to School Board members. 9,000 community members participated in the survey and 50 percent of the respondents were parents. It’s important to note that those who oppose the uniform policy are strongly opposed. According to a principal survey, there are 54 schools currently implementing a uniform policy. 51 percent of the principals plan to implement school uniforms for 2016-2017.

If the uniform policy was implemented district-wide and the Duval County Student Code of Conduct would have to be updated. There were concerns among a few board members about disadvantaged students and their families along with ISSP rules for those who don’t adhere to the rules. The Duval County School Board decided to take the stakeholders input into consideration therefore the uniform policy will not be on the agenda for voting at the April 5 School Board Meeting.
